Chapter Ten

Stone had never had as much fun in his life as he was having working with Felicity and Tugger, and training every day with Dandy. Riding bareback in pro rodeo had given him consistent shots of adrenaline that he’d once craved and chased, but working with Felicity was a new adventure every day in a totally different way.

And every day he grew closer to Felicity, learning new things about her personality, what she liked and what she didn’t, and he was quickly discovering she was as beautiful on the inside as the outside. He admired her intelligence and her sense of humor and the way she delighted in most everything she encountered.

He knew she’d been through a lot, and he felt her struggles, especially with her faith. For a man who’d once been oblivious to other people’s emotions, he was learning sympathy and empathy from Felicity, things he knew would serve him well in the future when he moved on to the rodeo school in Wyoming.

The thought of leaving Whispering Pines appealed to him less and less these days. Maybe it was that he was all-in on this avalanche dog training, but in some ways, he wondered what would happen if he put rodeo behind him for good. With his mother still dealing with her cancer treatments, it wasn’t a decision he needed to make right away, but it was often on his mind.

Today, he and Felicity were digging several holes in the snow, everywhere from five to thirty inches deep, in which to hide a few of Felicity’s rose-scented scarves. That Tugger and Dandy were able to smell scents at those depths amazed him, but Felicity assured him they’d been trained specifically to the scent of her rose perfume.

He definitely couldn’t fault the dogs for being all-in on following that particular scent. It was quickly becoming Stone’s favorite smell, as well. His heart always beat a little bit faster whenever he got a whiff of the light floral bouquet when Felicity was near.

“All done,” he said, leaning back on his heels as he closed up the last and deepest of the six holes.

“Awesome. Now we can go back to the starting line and let the dogs do their thing. We’ll follow right behind them.”

They returned to where they’d left the dogs and released them from their down/stays. Both Dandy and Tugger were dressed in their bright red avalanche service dog vests that contrasted vibrantly against the white snow. Stone found it interesting how both dogs, even with their puppy energy, knew it was time to work when their vests went on.

“Let’s let Tugger uncover the first one,” she suggested as they approached the first scarf, which was buried five inches down. “Tugger, find.”

The spotted brown pit bull sniffed the ground, his nose unerringly leading him straight to the correct spot, where he alerted with joyous barking while at the same time voraciously digging in the snow.

Felicity joined in, exclaiming excitedly. Praising Tugger, she dug alongside the dog with her half-sized foldable shovel.
